Katamereka Tools – Why does a photo from an iPhone show up as a .heic file that a website or an older PC refuses to open? Because iPhones save photos in HEIF by default, and the fix is either to convert existing files to JPG or to tell the phone to shoot JPG from now on.

This guide covers iPhone and iPad settings, Preview and Photos on a Mac, and Windows 10 or 11, based on Apple‘s and Microsoft‘s own documentation checked on October 27, 2026.

Why iPhone Photos Are HEIC

HEIC is the file extension for HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format. Apple says it compresses better than JPEG, so the same photo takes up less storage.

Apple switched to it with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. Most Apple devices handle it without complaint, but some upload forms, older software, and older PCs still expect JPG.

Make Your iPhone Shoot JPG Instead

The quickest fix is changing the camera format before you take the next photo.

  1. Open Settings and tap Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Choose Most Compatible.

Most Compatible saves photos as JPEG and videos as H.264. Photos you’ve already taken stay HEIC, and the menu only appears on models that can capture HEIF.

The trade-off is storage. JPG files are larger, so a phone that’s nearly full fills up faster.

Let the iPhone Convert on Transfer

There’s a middle ground: shoot HEIC, but hand out JPG.

When you share by AirDrop, Messages, or email, Apple says the phone may convert the photo to JPEG automatically if the receiving device can’t read HEIF. Importing over USB into Photos, Image Capture, or a Windows PC can convert files too.

Want the opposite, the untouched original? Go to Settings > Apps > Photos and tap Keep Originals at the bottom.

Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

Macs already read HEIC, so conversion is just an export, per Apple’s HEIF support article.

In Preview, open the photo, choose File > Export, set the format to JPEG, and save. In the Photos app, select the pictures and export them as JPEG.

Say you need twenty photos for a rental application. Select them all in Photos and export in one go, instead of opening each in Preview.

Open and Convert HEIC on Windows

Windows needs two add-ons from the Microsoft Store before it can show HEIC photos.

ExtensionWhat it does
HEIF Image ExtensionLets Windows read and write HEIF files
HEVC Video ExtensionsDecodes the images stored inside .heic files

Microsoft’s Store listing for the HEIF extension notes that .heic images also need the HEVC package. Check the price shown in your region’s Store before installing.

Once both are in place, Windows apps can open the photos. Save a copy as JPG from any image app that offers a JPEG option.

If Conversion Still Fails

A few things block the usual fixes.

  • The photo opens but looks blank on Windows: the HEVC extension is likely missing.
  • An upload form still rejects the file: check that the extension really changed to .jpg, not just the name.

Don’t delete the HEIC originals until you’ve opened the JPG copies and checked them. HEIC files are smaller for the same photo, which makes them a sensible archive copy.

If your phone is almost full, keep High Efficiency on and convert only the photos you actually need to send.
