Katamereka Tools – Product photo for a marketplace listing, a headshot for a badge, a logo that needs a clear backdrop: all of them need the background gone. Windows and Mac can now do this with apps they already include, no download needed.

This guide covers Paint on Windows 11, Preview on a Mac, Photos on iPhone, and Adobe’s free web tool, based on official documentation checked October 27, 2026. Each one saves a cutout you can drop onto any color later.

Remove a Background in Paint on Windows 11

Microsoft started rolling out a one-click background remover in Paint for Windows 11 in September 2023, according to the Windows Insider blog.

  1. Open the image in Paint, or paste it onto the canvas.
  2. Click Remove background on the toolbar.
  3. Save the result as a PNG so the empty area stays transparent.

Paint detects the subject across the whole image by default. To limit it, draw a box with the rectangle select tool first, then click the button.

Say the photo shows two people and you only need one. Select the person you want before removing the background.

Use Preview on a Mac

Preview has a Remove Background button, per Apple‘s Preview User Guide.

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Click Remove Background.
  3. When asked to convert the file to PNG, click Convert, or click Cancel and use File > Duplicate to keep the original.

Changed your mind? Edit > Undo brings the background back.

For tricky edges, Apple also documents the Smart Lasso. Trace around the subject in Markup’s selection tools, close the outline, then choose Edit > Copy.

Lift a Subject on iPhone

The Photos app can cut the subject out of a photo so you can copy and share it in other apps, Apple’s iPhone User Guide says.

The exact taps vary by iOS version, so open the “Lift a subject” page in Apple’s iPhone User Guide for yours. A plain background behind a person, pet, or product gives the cleanest cutout.

Use Adobe Firefly in a Browser

When you’re on a work computer or a Chromebook, a web tool fills the gap.

Adobe’s background remover runs in Adobe Firefly and is free with an Adobe account, using a daily allowance of generations. It accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 50 MB and downloads a transparent PNG, according to Adobe.

  1. Sign in to Adobe Firefly.
  2. Upload the photo in the Image module’s Edit tab.
  3. Choose Remove Background from Quick Actions on the left.
  4. Click Download in the top-right corner.

Uploading means the image leaves your device. Use the built-in Paint or Preview tools for ID photos and anything private.

If the Edges Look Rough

Automatic cutouts guess where the subject ends, and hair, glass, and shadows confuse them.

  • Retake the photo against a plain wall with even light.
  • Crop closer before removing, so there’s less background to guess.
  • Zoom in after saving and check for leftover patches around fingers or hair.

Save cutouts as PNG, not JPG. JPG has no transparency, so the removed area turns back into a solid color.

Next time you shoot something you’ll need to cut out, stand it in front of a blank wall first.
