Katamereka Tools – An authenticator app gives you the second login step without waiting for a text message to arrive. Google Authenticator is a free one for Android and iPhone.
This guide covers setting it up for a Google Account, adding other sites, and moving codes to a new phone, based on Google‘s help page checked October 27, 2026. The app needs Android 6.0 or later, or the latest iOS.
How Authenticator Codes Work
The app shows a short code for each account, and the code keeps changing.
After you type your password, the website asks for the current code. Someone who steals only your password still can’t get in without your phone.
That’s why the FTC recommends adding a second step, such as an authenticator app, to accounts exposed in data breaches.
Set It Up for Your Google Account
- Install Google Authenticator from Google Play or the App Store.
- Open your Google Account’s 2-Step Verification settings and sign in.
- Tap Set up authenticator (some phones show Get Started).
- Follow the on-screen steps.
Google notes it can take up to 7 days for Authenticator to appear as a sign-in option. Don’t remove your other second step until it does.
Add Other Websites
Most services that support authenticator apps work the same way.
In the site’s security settings, turn on two-step or two-factor sign-in and choose the authenticator option. The site shows a QR code. Add a new code in the app, scan it, then type the code back into the website to confirm.
Say your bank, email, and shopping accounts all offer it. Start with email, since password resets for everything else usually go there.
Turn On Syncing First
This step decides whether a lost phone is an inconvenience or a crisis.
Sign in to your Google Account inside the app and your codes sync across devices, according to Google. It says the codes are encrypted in transit and at rest.
You can skip signing in, but then codes live only on that one phone. Syncing needs Android 6.0 or later, or app version 4.0 or later on iOS.
Move Codes to a New Phone
Synced codes are easy: sign in to the same Google Account in the app on the new phone.
Codes that aren’t synced need a manual transfer.
- On the new phone, install the app and tap Get Started.
- On the old phone, open Menu > Transfer codes > Export codes, unlock it, pick the accounts, and tap Next.
- On the new phone, open Menu > Transfer codes > Import codes and scan the QR code shown.
Keep the old phone until every site works on the new one.
If Codes Fail or the Phone Is Lost
A rejected code is often a clock problem. Since version 7.0, the app uses your phone’s time setting, so make sure the time and time zone are set correctly.
If the phone is lost or stolen, Google says to erase it remotely right away. For synced codes, remove that device from your Google Account. For unsynced codes, sign in to each site another way and remove the old authenticator.
Before you close the app today, check that you’re signed in so your codes have a backup.
