How to Use PowerToys on Windows 11: 5 Tools Worth Trying

Microsoft's free PowerToys adds Always On Top, Text Extractor, FancyZones and more to Windows. Here's how to install it and use the most practical tools.

Productivity Tools

Katamereka Tools – Microsoft makes a free toolkit that adds dozens of small upgrades Windows doesn’t ship with: pinning a window on top, copying text out of a screenshot, snapping apps into custom layouts. It’s called PowerToys, and it installs like any other app.

This guide covers installation and five of the most useful tools, based on Microsoft‘s official PowerToys documentation updated October 14, 2026. It applies to Windows 11 and to Windows 10 version 2004 or newer.

Install PowerToys in Two Minutes

PowerToys is free and open source, with its code on GitHub.

Your PC needs a 64-bit processor, x64 or ARM64, and Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later. Microsoft recommends two ways to install it:

  1. The Microsoft Store listing, at aka.ms/getPowertoys.
  2. The GitHub releases page, where you download the x64 or ARM64 setup file from the Assets list.

After setup, an overview window walks through each tool. Turn individual tools on or off from the Home page of PowerToys Settings.

Pin Any Window With Always On Top

Press Win + Ctrl + T and the active window stays above everything else.

A colored border shows which window is pinned. Press the same shortcut again to unpin it.

Say you’re following a recipe or tutorial video while typing notes. Pin the small window and it won’t disappear every time you click elsewhere.

Remote desktop and virtual machine windows may still cover a pinned window, Microsoft notes.

Copy Text From Anything With Text Extractor

Text Extractor copies text from anywhere on the screen using OCR, which means text recognition. That includes text inside photos, paused videos, and apps that block copying.

  1. Press Win + Shift + T.
  2. Drag a box around the text.
  3. Paste it wherever you need it.

It only recognizes languages whose OCR pack is installed in Windows, and it follows your system language by default. Proofread the result, since recognition isn’t perfect.

Build Custom Layouts With FancyZones

FancyZones lets you divide the screen into zones and drop windows into them.

Open the layout editor with Win + Shift + backtick (the ` key). Then hold Shift while dragging any window, and the zones appear so you can drop it in place.

It’s most useful on wide monitors with room for three or more windows side by side.

Four More Worth Turning On

These need almost no setup.

ToolWhat it does
Image ResizerResizes photos from the right-click menu in File Explorer
PeekPreviews a file’s contents without opening its app
AwakeKeeps the PC awake without changing power settings
Command PaletteOpens apps, commands, and tools from one search box

If a Shortcut Doesn’t Work

Most problems come from conflicts, not bugs.

  • Another app may already use the same key combination. Change the PowerToys shortcut in its Settings page.
  • The tool may be switched off. Check its toggle on the PowerToys Home page.
  • PowerToys has to be running in the background for any shortcut to fire.

PowerToys checks for updates while it runs and can show a notification when a new version is out. Keep it updated, since tools and shortcuts change between releases.

Start with Always On Top; it’s the one you’ll use by tomorrow.
