Katamereka Tools – Google Docs only opens on a plane if offline mode was switched on earlier, while the laptop still had Wi-Fi. It has to be set up in advance, from Chrome or Edge, before the connection drops.

These steps follow Google‘s Docs Editors Help as of October 27, 2026, and cover Docs, Sheets, and Slides on computers, Android, and iPhone or iPad. Setup takes about two minutes.

What You Need Before Going Offline

Offline access only works in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, according to Google’s offline help page.

You also need:

  • An internet connection during setup
  • The Google Docs Offline extension, installed and turned on
  • Enough free storage on the device
  • A normal browser window, since private or incognito mode isn’t supported

Firefox and Safari users are out of luck here. Install Chrome or Edge just for this, or use the phone apps covered below.

Turn On Offline Mode on a Computer

One switch in Google Drive covers all three apps.

  1. Open Google Drive in Chrome or Edge.
  2. Click the Settings gear, then Settings.
  3. Turn on the Offline setting.
  4. On Edge, follow the prompt to the Chrome Web Store and add the extension.

Google notes that turning offline on or off in Docs, Sheets, or Slides applies to the other two as well. On ChromeOS, or with Drive for desktop installed, it may already be on.

Pick the Files You’ll Need

Turning offline on doesn’t guarantee every file is saved. Mark the important ones yourself.

From the Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen, click More on a file and choose Available offline. A check mark appears in the bottom left corner of its thumbnail.

Already inside a file? Go to File > Make available offline instead.

To confirm, click the See document status icon next to the file’s title. It tells you whether the file is ready or explains what’s wrong.

Work Offline on Android and iPhone

The mobile apps handle this on their own, with no extension.

  1. Open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app.
  2. Tap Menu, then Settings.
  3. Turn on Make recent files available offline.

For one specific file, tap More next to it, then Make available offline. Saved files appear under Menu > Offline.

Say you’re heading somewhere with bad reception. Mark the two or three files you’ll actually edit, rather than trusting the recent list to include them.

One Account per Browser Profile

This rule trips up people with both a personal and a work account.

Google allows offline mode for only one account in each browser profile. Create a second Chrome or Edge profile for the other account and switch it on there.

Work and school accounts are a separate case. An administrator can block offline sync entirely, and the message “Offline sync is disabled by your administrator” means only IT can change it.

When Offline Sync Fails

Most errors clear up with a quick reset of the file.

  • “Could not sync document”: open File > Make available offline to remove the check mark, then select it again.
  • The same error keeps coming back: the file may be too large, so copy smaller sections into new documents.
  • Stuck on “Checking offline sync status”: reload the page, or clear site data for docs.google.com.

Before you clear site data, reconnect and let any offline edits finish syncing. Clearing site data wipes the browser’s local copy, so wait until changes have reached Google’s servers.

Tonight, while you’re still online, open Drive settings and flip that one switch.
