Katamereka Tools – “Can AI read a 60-page PDF and tell me what matters?” Yes: the free versions of ChatGPT and Google Gemini both accept PDF uploads and will summarize them. The catch is knowing their limits, so the summary doesn’t quietly skip half the file.

This guide covers the free tiers of ChatGPT and the Gemini app as described in their help centers on October 27, 2026. Limits change often, so treat the numbers as a snapshot.

Compare the Free Limits First

Both tools handle typical reports and contracts, but they cap things differently.

Uploads3 files per dayUp to 10 files per prompt, with rolling usage limits
Max size per document512 MB100 MB
Reads images inside PDFsNo, text onlyNot stated

OpenAI‘s file upload FAQ also caps text documents at 2 million tokens each. Google’s help page describes a 1 million token window, about 1,500 pages, but ties that larger window to its paid plans.

Summarize a PDF in ChatGPT

ChatGPT accepts PDFs, Word files, and presentations, per its help center.

  1. Open a new chat in ChatGPT.
  2. Attach the PDF to your message.
  3. Type what you want, then send.

There’s one big blind spot. OpenAI says ChatGPT analyzes only the text in a PDF, so charts, photos, and scanned pages are skipped. An image-only PDF, like a phone scan of a paper form, won’t work at all.

Summarize a PDF in Gemini

Gemini’s upload flow is spelled out step by step in Google‘s Gemini Apps help.

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Type your prompt in the box at the bottom.
  3. Click Add files, then Upload Files, or Add from Drive for a Google Drive file.
  4. Click Submit.

Google warns that very large files can lead to answers that miss details, and suggests uploading smaller files instead. A 300-page manual works better as a few chapters.

Working in Chrome? Google also documents a Gemini in Chrome panel with the same Add files button, handy when the PDF is already open in a tab.

Write Prompts That Get Useful Summaries

“Summarize this” gets a generic paragraph. Ask for the shape you actually need.

  • “List the five key findings, with the page number for each.”
  • “What deadlines, fees, or penalties does this contract mention?”
  • “Explain this report to someone with no finance background, in 150 words.”

Say you’re comparing two insurance policies. Upload both and ask for a table of coverage limits, side by side, instead of two separate summaries.

For research across many files, a dedicated tool like Gemini Notebook keeps answers tied to your sources.

When the Summary Gets It Wrong

AI summaries can drop a key exception or misread a number. Check before you rely on one.

  • Ask the tool to quote the exact sentence behind any figure, then find it in the PDF.
  • For scanned documents, convert them to text first. Google Drive can turn a PDF into an editable Google Doc using text recognition, per its Docs help pages.
  • Keep confidential files out unless your employer approves the tool. OpenAI says chat files stay until that chat’s retention period ends, and Gemini counts uploads toward your Gemini Apps activity.

A summary saves reading time; it doesn’t replace reading the parts you’ll sign.
